Wall mounted shelving is just that, shelving that is connected directly onto the wall. The strength of the self is directly related to the proper mounting of the brackets used to hold the self up. Most shelving packages will come with directions that are pretty straight forward.

Wall mounted shelving can be hung a couple of different ways, each having their pros and cons. The most common type of wall mounted shelving has brackets that run North and South on the wall, top to bottom. Then they have steel shelf support brackets that fit into slots and extend outwards from the wall. The wooden shelves sit on top of the support brackets. These types are great because they very simple to put up, they allow anyone to hang them, and they’re strong and adjustable. The downside is that they are not very appealing to the eye or stylish. You’re also Limited in the number of designs that are available.

Another technique and style used is called a floating shelf. What happens here is the steel bracket mounts to the wall and the shelf slides onto two or three rods protruding out. They can be securely locked tight, usually by a small hex bolt or screw accessible on the bottom of the shelf. These are very appealing to the eye, and come in a large variety of colors and styles. The downside, they usually only come in singles, and they tend to be a little harder to install. The weight they can bare tends to be a less then the wall mount with visible brackets.

When securing any type of shelving, be sure to always try to fasten the brackets directly to the studs themselves. If you can have the screws go right into the wooden or metal studs, chances are your shelf will stay sturdy and be safe and useful for many years to come. You can buy an inexpensive stud finder at your local hardware store, and they tend to work pretty well. Wall mount shelving is the perfect addition to a child’s room, family room, bathroom, kitchen, garage…well the list could go on and on. Although mentioned above were only a couple different varieties, wall mount shelving can be found with glass, wood, metal, or wire shelves. They can instantly add some display space to show off your collectables and such, usually fairly inexpensively.
